Working on large IoT systems with national impact

The early adopter:

Working at AMIS Conclusion is more than just a job. It is a passion. Meet Sam Vruggink, IoT Consultant. An exciting role that delivers real value to organisations. But what does his work as an IoT Consultant involve? Which projects is he working on? And what makes AMIS Conclusion stand out for Sam? Read on to find out!

Who are you and what do you do?

I’m Sam, I’m 23, I live in Woerden and I’ve been working at AMIS Conclusion for two years. I started here as a fulltime intern, then joined part time alongside my studies. After graduating, I began working full time at AMIS Conclusion as a consultant. Outside work, I enjoy gaming, watching films and playing guitar. I’m also a pretty good cook, if my girlfriend is to be believed.

You’re a consultant at AMIS Conclusion. What does that involve?

As an IoT consultant, I connect the physical world with the digital world. I make sure systems communicate effectively with each other. Whether it involves connecting sensors in a toaster to a mobile app or fully integrating a large CRM system, it all comes down to integration on a huge scale. Rapid developments in IoT and growing demand for IoT solutions mean I often face exciting challenges.

Which projects are you working on?

I currently work in the integration practice at AMIS Conclusion. I started with a project for a large cleaning company, where I contributed to a smart office management tool for ‘smart cleaning’. I’m also actively involved in a major IoT project for Eneco, connecting all the ‘smart heat meters’ in people’s homes on district heating networks to the cloud. This means residents no longer have to submit their own consumption readings, while Eneco can use the data to reduce the amount of energy supplied. This contributes to Eneco’s energy transition – a huge project aimed at achieving net zero CO2 emissions by 2050.

Which project do you enjoy working on most?

Eneco. I started as the first developer on this project, and it has now grown into a team of dozens of people. It’s great to contribute ideas from the very beginning and see your own work reflected in the project’s foundations. The project also has a significant impact on Dutch consumers and a sustainable society.

You’ve probably heard the phrase ‘Difference is essential’ within Conclusion. What does it mean to you?

Sharing knowledge widely and collaborating with different companies within Conclusion on exciting projects that make a positive impact on society. AMIS Conclusion also really sees you as an individual. You have the freedom to pursue what you want to do, and they believe in you. You can easily switch practices if your interests take you in another direction, and there is no hierarchy – you can literally have a coffee with anyone. The healthy culture, limited internal competition and extensive knowledge sharing make the difference for me.

Is difference essential, or should it simply be allowed?

That’s a difficult question! Difference is essential, even if it sometimes creates more friction. It gives you perspectives you wouldn’t otherwise have. Fresh eyes, a different approach. A little friction brings out the shine, right? ;)

What do you see as the advantage of the Conclusion ecosystem?

In my view, large companies can get bogged down in hierarchy. It can be difficult to speak to the management team, for example, because several departmental managers sit between you. The relatively small companies within the Conclusion ecosystem make direct contact possible and allow us to respond more quickly. There is also very little hierarchy. That makes it a great place to work!

What are you particularly proud of at the moment?

I’ve been given the opportunity to gain several certifications. They are very challenging and allow me to keep expanding my knowledge. I also find them valuable for both myself and the company.

Finally, is there anything else you’d like to add?

IT companies sometimes have a stuffy image, but that certainly isn’t the case at AMIS Conclusion. The people here are very sociable, and you can talk to them about absolutely anything. This contributes to a very good work/life balance. The company outings are fantastic too! Could you be my next colleague?
