Platform Operations: manage it yourself or outsource?
"Why pay for management when nothing ever goes wrong?"
As Manager of Platform Operations, I regularly hear this question: “Why should I pay you when nothing ever goes wrong?” Honestly, I consider it the greatest compliment. It means our work stands out precisely because it goes unnoticed.
My answer is usually: “My team likes to sleep peacefully too. And I want the same for you. That is why we automate so many processes, so you can enjoy your weekend without receiving a call at three in the morning.”
What is the value of Platform Operations?
From the outside, Platform Operations looks simple: keeping systems running. But much more happens under the bonnet. It is about continuity: data must remain available, applications must be reliable and downtime must be minimised. Your organisation may be perfectly capable of managing this itself, until something suddenly goes wrong. Often, everything depends on one or two internal specialists who happen to be unavailable when needed most. Operations stop, and it becomes clear that one person makes the difference between business as usual and an entire process chain coming to a halt.
At AMIS Conclusion, we manage environments for customers across sectors including energy, healthcare, transport and logistics, retail and agriculture. These systems are critical to their daily operations. When something goes wrong, the impact can be enormous: trains may stop running or production processes may face significant delays. We prevent this through round-the-clock monitoring, preventive maintenance and lifecycle management.
Why managing it yourself often goes wrong
Many organisations think: our systems are running fine, aren’t they? And while everything works, it can seem as though nobody is doing anything. After all, the system runs automatically. Until something needs attention: an incident, an update or a change. Suddenly, it turns out that only “that one colleague” knows what to do. And if they are unavailable? The entire operation stops.
One real-world example involved a large organisation with a single in-house database administrator. When a serious incident occurred, that person was unavailable. Fortunately, we were able to bring in a specialist on Sunday to resolve the problem, allowing production to resume on Monday. Naturally, we would rather avoid situations like this. We prefer to schedule maintenance during quieter periods: regularly, in a controlled way and without stress for our team or, most importantly, our customers. We implement measures to prevent data loss during disruptions. Better still, we prevent incidents from happening in the first place.
The benefits of outsourcing platform management
The main difference between managing your platform internally and working with a specialist Platform Operations partner lies in safeguarding expertise and availability. Instead of relying on one internal specialist, you gain access to a team of consultants who continuously monitor and optimise systems.
Round-the-clock monitoring and ongoing updates allow potential problems to be resolved before they have an impact. A specialist partner also ensures that the environment meets current security and compliance requirements. Whether a minor disruption or a critical incident requiring several experts, they have the capacity and expertise to respond quickly and effectively.
This approach also preserves knowledge. Technology develops rapidly, and no individual can keep up with everything, let alone implement it all properly. External specialists work daily with technologies including Oracle, Microsoft Azure and PostgreSQL, follow developments and apply them in a controlled way.
We standardise how environments are configured. Backups, monitoring, diagnostics, upgrades and disaster recovery all use standardised solutions. Investing in good solutions delivers greater security, better stability, predictability and lower total management costs.
Prevention is better than cure
When customers ask, “Why pay for something that never goes wrong?”, I know we are doing our job well. They notice none of the work. No outages. No unexpected downtime. No weekend stress.
That is exactly the point. This peace of mind and stability do not happen automatically: they result from continuous monitoring, careful maintenance and timely updates. Keeping systems up to date prevents risks to business operations, such as compliance issues, security vulnerabilities and unpredictable crashes. You address these problems through preventive action, before something goes wrong.
It simply has to work, all the time
Customers today expect immediate answers, even at night and at weekends. Automated processes run continuously across different time zones. Updates, monitoring and patches must therefore be carried out smoothly and without disruption.
Think of a fire alarm and sprinkler system: you hope you will never need them. But if something goes wrong, you are glad someone responds immediately, limits the damage and regularly checks that everything remains fire-safe. That is exactly what Platform Operations does: keeping your systems reliable and secure. Always.
What if a company can manage it internally?
Of course, some companies are large enough to organise Platform Operations themselves. They have round-the-clock teams, invest in retaining expertise and closely monitor their platforms. Yet even these organisations increasingly choose to place some or all of the responsibility with an external partner. Why? Because they know that partner has up-to-date expertise, clear processes and effective tools to ensure availability without requiring their constant attention. This allows them to focus on what makes their business distinctive.
Outsource or manage it yourself? A strategic choice
The decision between managing operations internally and outsourcing is ultimately strategic. What matters more: retaining full control or relying on a partner who provides peace of mind, assurance and continuity? At AMIS Conclusion, we take that responsibility seriously. We ensure day-to-day system availability and help customers plan for the future of their IT landscape. Platform Operations may often be invisible, but it is the backbone of your organisation.
How much effort do you want to invest in something another party can handle faster, better, more reliably and at a lower cost? You do not need your own fire brigade unless you run an airport or petrochemical facility. You can confidently leave it to the experts.
